History to Go: Introduction
to the Heritage Center’s Educational Outreach Kits
Appropriate Audience: Educators of grades 1-12

No trick—the Heritage Center’s outreach kits are a
real treat! Chock-full of artifacts, supplies, and interactives,
they have everything you need to present dynamic lessons that
bring local history and heritage to life for your students. Explore
the culture of local Native American tribes through authentic
artifacts in our Susquehannock Indian Basket. Try your hand at
Fraktur with the supplies in our Tools of the Penman kit. Get
a glimpse into Amish culture with our Amish Arts and Sunshine
and Shadow kits.

Quilting
Across the Curriculum

This is a great workshop for teachers planning a school visit
to the newly renovated Quilt & Textile Museum! Come away with
unique and creative ideas for implementing a standards-based thematic
unit in your classroom. Take a guided tour of the museum and learn
to “quilt across the curriculum” with quilt-themed
lesson plans in math, language arts, social studies, science,
and family consumer science that you can take back to your classroom!
Developed with the help of Warwick School District teachers Marcia
Brenner and Petey Jones, all lesson plans align to PDE curriculum
standards.

A Make & Take Activity

“Snip”
into history with Scherenschnitte! You’ll learn the history
behind the German art of paper cutting, see notable examples from
the Heritage Center’s collection, and learn to make your
own pieces. Bring your know-how back to the classroom and have
your students make Scherenschnitte Valentines—a great standards-based
local history tie-in—or bookmarks to add an artistic touch
to literacy. Related books will be available, as will complimentary
refreshments courtesy of Barnes & Noble.

Get to know Thaddeus Stevens, Susannah Wright, Frank Woolworth,
and many more local historical figures! Learn how early settlers
used rabbit brains to soothe the gums of teething babies! Discover
the cruel and unusual punishments that thieves were subjected
to in early Lancaster! The Heritage Center offers three distinct
forty-five minute in-school presentations given by a museum professional.
These programs were developed by a certified teacher and can be
tailored to your students’ grade level and area of study.
